Planting for the future

PUPILS from Evenlode Primary School have been helping to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Tree Council's National Tree Week by planting more trees inside their grounds.

Backed by a grant from environmental charity The Tree Council, the lead UK tree campaigning partnership, the pupils have planted three new trees - a silver birch, a flowering mountain ash and a winter flowering cherry, to add to the numerous species already growing in the school's grounds.

Every one of the 16 classes in the school is named after trees found in Evenlode's grounds.

The Tree Council's director general, Pauline Buchanan-Black, said: "We are able to make this grant thanks largely to the generosity of the anonymous charitable foundation.

"We are delighted that Evenlode Primary School will be supporting the 30th anniversary of National Tree Week, our annual festival to mark the start of the planting season and celebrate trees and woods.

"We are urging everyone to plant trees - anywhere you live, work or play - and that's exactly what Evenlode school is doing.

"Trees not only beautify any local patch but also provide shade, shelter, a screen against traffic noise, habitats for wildlife and a valuable learning resource with relevance across the curriculum."
