Police called to school to stop "gang" trouble

POLICE were called to St Cyres Comprehensive School on Tuesday to prevent trouble erupting after a gang of youths from Cardiff turned up at the school gates, believed to be seeking revenge on a Penarth pupil.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "We received a call from the school after a gang appeared at the gates. We quickly diffused the situation.

"No arrests were made and no offences were committed. The group from Cardiff were very compliant and we escorted them back."

The gang was made up largely of youths from ethnic minorities but police say they do not believe the incident was racially motivated.

It is believed that the gang had come to Penarth to seek revenge following a fight last week between a St Cyres pupil and one of the group.

Brian Lightman, headmaster of St Cyres, said: "We made a call to the police after a suspicious group turned up at the school gates. They turned out to be truants from Fitzalan High School in Grangetown.

"The police responded very quickly and dealt with the situation superbly. It is not true that the school was closed or evacuated."
