PENARTH Town Council is doing its bit for the youth of the town by organising a weekend of activities and workshops specifically aimed at the younger generation.
A spokesman for the council said: "Following discussions about the lack of facilities and opportunities for young people in the town, we are currently working with the Penarth Youth Information Shop and Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service on a special event.
"It will be held in the town during the weekend of Friday, February 10 to Sunday, February 12, 2006.
"Actively involved in the planning of the event are the two youngest Town Councillors, Kate Jones and Ewan Turner."
The weekend of activities kicks off with an exhibition of local interest groups to be staged in the Paget Rooms after school, on the Friday from 4pm to 7pm.
Already a number of local sporting, dance, art and drama groups have agreed to attend, to promote their activities by providing information on the availability of local classes and to hopefully encourage young people to join.
On Saturday, February 11, the Kymin on Beach Road will be the venue for a Careers Fair from noon to 4pm.
A number of organisations will participate and it is hoped that others who are currently being contacted will also be represented.
So far representatives from the Army, banks, the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, local colleges, drum & bass workshops, drama and Funky Dragon have agreed to attend.
Saturday evening will be for socialising and so it will be back to the Paget Rooms where there will be a disco and an opportunity for local youth bands to perform live.
On Sunday there will be a late start to give even the late risers an opportunity to attend a free sample workshop provided by some of the interest groups that attended the Paget Rooms on the Friday.
These workshops will be held at various locations around the town.
In addition to Penarth Town Council's support, the event is being supported by local MP Alun Michael and Lorraine Barrett AM, who have both agreed to be in attendance over the weekend.
Inspector Huw Smart of Penarth Police has indicated also that his officers will be supporting the planned activities throughout the weekend.
