THE Sully Indoor Bowls Stadium, opened in 1997, has hosted many representative games including international events, but it is only just seeing the hard work in the development of juniors coming to fruition.
Coaching local schools from Sully and Penarth during term time and following this up with sessions on Sunday mornings has seen improvements in all aspects of the game by youthful bowlers.
Most notably: Jody Davies, selected for Wales at Under-25 level and Chris Wright, going to attend further coaching at the school of excellence - both youngsters coming from families with long pedigrees in the bowling world.
The team competing in the Junior League One travelled to Cynon Valley and defeated an extremely strong side by 4 shots.
Rink One: Stephan McKernan, Rhys Parker, Tom Maunders, Luke Stanley.
Rink Two: Rhys Phillips, Gwynfor Parr, Lance Parker, Ashley Brown.
Rink Three: Nick Symonds, Rosanna Denyer, Rhodri Davies, Matt Jackson.
Rink Four: Adam Burniston, Ash Connelly, Nick Close, Chris Wright.
All this only comes about by the dedication of people who enjoy the game of bowls and pass on their experience.
At the forefront of these, with their contact numbers, are: Neville Young (01446 792947) area co-ordinator for South Wales; Barbara Stanton (029 2053 0470) Sully Indoor Bowls; ably supported by Peter Small, John Ball, Steve Close, Des Dyer, Brian Castle, Dave Tuck and Pam and Denis Colston, all of whom are qualified coaches and members of the Welsh Bowls Coaching Association.
Bowls is for all ages, sexes and ability and can really be called a'game for life'. Further information can be obtained from the contact numbers above, if required.
