What matters to town

THE PENARTH Society has published a new pamphlet called Penarth Matters - addressing what it sees as the main issues facing the town.

The Penarth Society says its mission is to make Penarth a better place to live and work.

The pamphlet focuses on major Penarth issues - the town centre; the esplanade; the headland walkway; traffic; Penarth Heights; the Marina and Sports Village; and problem sites around the town.

The society is campaigning for a radical strategy to revamp the town centre with a plan for parking, access and circulation.

It says that key areas of the town have been allowed to fall into a derelict state through neglect. The pamphlet says: "The seafront is the town's unique feature.

"Its pier, promenade, ornamental gardens, cafes and restaurants, sailing and boat trips draw visitors all year round. But the pier pavilion is crumbling, and the one-way system cries out for renovation with first-class paving and signage."

It is also calling for action to avoid further traffic congestion owing to the Sports Village and Penarth Heights developments.

The Penarth Society is represented on the Vale of Glamorgan Council Conservation Group.

It describes itself as the civic society that focuses on the buildings, concerns and issues for Penarth.

It currently has 200 members and meets on the fourth Wednesday in every month, usually at the Washington Gallery.
