Cut waste and recycle cards

THE Vale of Glamorgan Council is urging all residents to recycle their Christmas cards in support of the Woodland Trust Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.

This scheme, which operates through Tesco supermarkets and branches of WH Smith, helps promote recycling as an alternative to burying rubbish at landfill sites, and raises valuable funds for the Trust.

Last year's scheme saw more than 58 million cards being recycled, and the Trust hope to reach over 60 million in 2006.

Helen Ball, Vale Council Waste Awareness Officer, said: "Christmas is a time when a huge amount of consumer waste is generated.

"By simply recycling Christmas cards, the public can address the problem and help save woods and trees.

"There are many wider environmental benefits too. Recycling just one Christmas card saves enough electricity to allow five people to watch the Queen's Christmas Day message."

Special recycling bins can be found in Tesco and WH Smith stores until Friday, January 31.

Card recycling bins will also be available at main Council offices and the following libraries: Barry, Llantwit Major, Cowbridge, Penarth and Wenvoe from Tuesday until Friday, January 20.
