Top of the table clash for ladies

ON a bitterly cold Saturday morning, the Windsor Ladies first team played their latest fixture in the Cymru Kitchens League at David Lloyd Racquets Club.

This was a top of the table clash as the Windsor first team currently head division two with David Lloyd snapping at their heels in second position.

As befits such a fixture, the match was a nail-biting affair with the result in doubt until the last ball was hit.

In the first round the Windsor second pair of Bethan Pilcher and Linda Ellis lost a close match against the David Lloyd first pair 6-5, 6-4 while the Windsor first pair of Margaret Richmond and Cathy O'Doherty beat opposing second couple 6-0, 6-4.

In the reverse matches, Bethan and Linda beat the second couple 6-2, 6-3 while Cathy and Margaret lost to the first pair 6-2, 6-5. At the end of the match, both teams were level at two events each, four sets each, but Windsor emerged the winners by 40 games to 33 to retain their place at the top of the table.

A win too for the Ladies Vets team who were on form earlier in the week.

They had lost to Llandybie the previous week by the narrowest of margins (one set), but on Saturday the Windsor team of Kay Clarke, Cathy O'Doherty, Margaret Richmond and Jane Williams had their revenge and defeated Llandybie by three matches to one.

Windsor Men's Cymru Kitchens team achieved a well-earned draw against a strong Esporta Swansea team on Sunday.

First seeds Nick Chisnall and Dan Sidaway got the men off to a flying start, beating the opposing second pair of Esporta head coach Nigel Rees and David Lloyd in a final set tiebreak.

Tom Sidford and Tom Cole (captain) achieved a creditable 6-2 6-3 defeat to former Welsh number one Nick Rees and Anthony Hartnall, as did Nick and Dan, 6-2 6- 2.

In the final rubber, Tom and Tom defeated the opposing second seeds 6-2 6-4, ensuring a 2-2 draw.

The team's final match of the winter season will be against Llantrisant at home on February 13.

What a difference a week makes! Flushed with success after defeating St Fagans the previous week, the Windsor Men's vets team of Peter Owen, Alan Hope, Phil Davies and Bill Ellis were full of confidence at the prospect of meeting Bridgend on Sunday last.

Sadly, the opposition were just too good and although the Windsor team fought to the bitter end, they went down by four matches to nil.
