Jeweller trial is adjourned

THE trial of jeweller Gary Riggs, owner of the Band of Gold shop in Penarth, has been adjourned because of the unavailability of witnesses in the case.

A new trial date has been set for February 17.

Riggs is charged with obtaining property by deception, theft and witness intimidation.

The charges include obtaining 10,000 by deception by passing off a counterfeit yellow Rolex watch as genuine, and 6,500 by deception by falsely representing that a counterfeit Rolex Yachtmaster was genuine.

He is accused of tricking a pensioner into swapping a 40,000 diamond ring for cheap costume jewellery.

Riggs is also alleged to have agreed to melt down jewellery to make fresh jewellery but instead put it up for sale and returned cheap bangles to the customer.

Riggs is charged with obtaining 14,000 by deception after falsely representing that a three-and-a-half carat diamond ring was a 5-carat one.

He denies all charges.
