ON Saturday, playing in glorious spring conditions, the Windsor Tennis Club first ladies' team played the final match in their Cymru Kitchens league.
Since losing their first match, which was played away against Swansea last October, the ladies' first team have been undefeated, so the pressure was on to extend their eight-match winning record and win the final match of the winter season.
The Windsor first pair of Margaret Richmond and Cathy O'Doherty were in convincing form, defeating the Stow Park second couple 6-0, 6-1.
The Windsor second pairing of Linda Ellis and Jane Williams had a much tougher encounter against the Stow Park first pair. Windsor won the first set on a tie-breaker and then came from 5-2 down in the second set to win the set and clinch the match (after nearly two hours on court), again in a tie-break.
In the second round, Margaret and Cathy continued their sparkling form and beat Stow Park First couple 6-2, 6-1, while Jane and Linda eventually defeated the Stow Park second pair, after a lengthy struggle, in another tie-break finish, coming through 6-3, 6-5.
The first team squad were Kay Clarke, Linda Ellis, Gill Latham, Avril Morgan, Cathy O'Doherty, Bethan Pilcher, Margaret Rich-mond and Jane Williams.
Windsor Men's Cymru Kitchens team faced Llantrisant at home on Sunday in their final match of the winter season.
First pair Nick Chisnall and Luke Sidaway had what can only be described as an'off-day' as they produced two poor performances, losing to the opposing first pair 6-4 6-3 and to the opposing second pair 6-1 6-0, as they struggled with the conditions and the mixed pace of the Llantrisant men.
Needing to win both of their rubbers to record a draw for Windsor, second pair Rob Wedlake and Tom Cole won a closely fought champions tie-break to defeat the opposing second pair, and produced a confident display against the Llantrisant firsts, winning 6-4 6-4, ending the match two rubbers apiece.
In what has been a successful season for a young men's team, special thanks were paid to the other members of the squad who have contributed well throughout the season: Dan Owen, Dan Sidaway and Tom Sidford.
There is still time to sign up for half-term tennis camps, running from Monday, February 20 - ring Imed Hamrouni (club coach) on 07905 919796.
The next social event at Windsor is a quiz night, on Saturday, March 4 - and tables are being booked up fast.
Members are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to ensure a table.
The bar will be open from around 7.15pm and a ploughman's supper will be included in the ticket price.
