Importance of talking

PENARTH MP Alun Michael was at Ysgol Erw'r Delyn this week to celebrate the school winning a BT Schools Award worth 3,000.

Ysgol Erw'r Delyn was one of 200 winners, chosen from more than 750 entries, because they have proven their commitment to putting speaking and listening skills at the very heart of education.

Headteacher Mike Farrell said: "I am extremely grateful to BT for recognising the hard work that everyone in the school has put into improving the communications skills of our pupils."

The special school will now receive 1,000 cash to spend as they wish, a treasure chest including a DVD player, a full set of free communication skills resources, and a special BT drama workshop.

Mr Farrell added: "The 1,000 will be spent on a mobility tracking scheme which helps semi-independent pupils to get around the school in wheelchairs.

"It works thanks to sensors put into the floors around the school and the wheelchairs themselves."
