No revenge after all

PONTYCLUN 3

DINAS POWYS 2

WITH the Welsh League Division 1 side's game postponed last Saturday, the focus moved to the reserve side playing at Pontyclun in the Welsh League Reserve East. And they had emphatically beaten Dinas in the reverse fixture just seven days earlier.

Dinas seemed eager for revenge and took the game to their opponents in the first five minutes, but Pontyclun struck back, with Owain Williams having to clear off the line.

A couple of minutes later, Dinas made progress down the right, the ball eventually falling to Dave O'Gorman, and his cross to the far post found Steve Herniman, who shot under the keeper from an acute angle to score.

On ten minutes, Dinas increased their lead from a corner, taken by Andrew Salvidge, headed towards goal by Lloyd Davies, and finished from close range by Dave O'Gorman.

The Villagers continued to have the upper hand and when Steve Herniman set up Andrew Salvidge, his 20-yard shot forced the keeper into a diving save, to push the ball round the post for an unproductive corner.

Pontyclun started to work their way back into the game and it came as no surprise when a low cross ran along the edge of the area and was shot low into the corner of the net from 20 yards.

Within five minutes, Pontyclun were level, when their winger went down in the area and the spot kick was converted.

Dinas had a chance to regain the lead just before half-time when Andrew Salvidge picked the ball up on half way and went on a mesmerising 30-yard run, beating a couple of defenders before laying the ball off to Lloyd Davies, whose shot was pushed around the post by the keeper.

Dinas had the worst possible start to the second half when a right wing cross was allowed to reach a Pontyclun forward in the six yard box and he scored easily.

The home side were stretching the Dinas defence, with Joe Cusheri making a couple of good saves in the Dinas goal.

In the 75th minute, a mistake in the Pontyclun midfield enabled Dave O'Gorman to go on a run on goal, but his shot hit the side netting and in the 90th minute Darren Lane shot from 25 yards, forcing the keeper to make a save.

If Dinas hadn't thought that they had done enough in the first ten minutes, they may have taken something from the game.

One positive was the performance of Andrew Salvidge, who worked hard and was always willing to run at the home defence.

The Youth team drew 2-2 at Risca and the Ladies' game at Neath was postponed.
