WITH regards to the letters in the Penarth Times on February 2 and 9 concerning the junction at Barons Court, I sympathise with Max Wallis concerning the lack of provision for cyclists.
My husband regularly diced with death on his way to work as motorists ignored his presence.
However, the only time he was hit off his bike was when going through traffic lights (green ones!).
I disagree with Lorraine Barrett, however, that lights at Tesco would ease congestion.
One only has to see how traffic has slowed at the Cardiff Bay roundabout in all directions since the addition of lights.
I suggested to Cardiff City Council that these become part-time, to no avail.
Dedicated left hand lanes at both these major roundabouts would help considerably.
As for the smaller Tesco roundabout, if traffic is not travelling from the Marina it will only be backed up further along Windsor Road. Maybe a flyover at Barons Court like exists at Gabalfa would help, with underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists.
This week"s headline suggests there is a desire to fix this problem, yet no clear designs of how.
Any changes at the Merrie Harrier will not prevent delays at Barons Court. Any bus lane plans should include provision for cyclists and pedestrians.
Keeping roundabouts and installing peak time traffic lights keeps traffic moving, reduces pollution and delays (especially at night in the absence of traffic) and eases congestion when necessary.
Full-time lights only worsen the problem.
