ON behalf of the Penarth Youth Project and the Vale Youth Service, Penarth Town Council would like to thank all individuals and groups that kindly gave up their time to take part in the inaugural Penarth Youth Festival that took place from February 10 to 12.
The festival was opened on Friday, February 10 at the Paget Rooms by Nicky Robinson of Cardiff Blues and the Welsh Rugby Squad, and the Town Mayor Councillor Charles Curran.
Nicky Robinson was a delightful guest who encouraged the young people present to view the many opportunities and activities available to them in Penarth, displayed that evening in the Paget Rooms.
Nicky then very patiently and with great humour gave many signings.
It was superb to see Nicky take part in the winning team of the Wales v Scotland Six Nations rugby match on the following Sunday.
Other civic dignitaries in attendance at the opening event were Alun Michael MP, Lorraine Barrett AM, and the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Councillor Margaret Alexander and her Consort Mrs Bonnie Belli.
They were joined by Town Councillors Nigel Gibbs, Janice Birch, Jill Penn, Gwyn Roberts and Mark Wilson.
The weekend saw a mix of activities taking place in the Paget Rooms, the Kymin, the Leisure Centre and various other locations in the town.
The weather on Saturday was sunny and mild which allowed the Army and local police to stage displays and activities in the grounds of the Kymin.
In Kymin House there was a steady stream of young people who visited the stands of the various organisations who came to advertise career/university opportunities.
On Saturday night at the Paget Rooms, the Vibe staged the ultimate teen party and although the anticipated numbers did not materialise, those who did attend had great fun.
On Sunday various groups organised workshops and displays that young people could attend free of charge and most were well supported.
The small working group that organised this event are pleased with the way things went and consider that the activities are a base on which to build similar events in the future.
Evaluations are now taking place and the Town Council, Penarth Youth Project and Vale Youth Service will determine the way forward.
If you have any comments you wish to make in relation to the Youth Festival you can contact Shan Bowden at Penarth Town Council offices on 029 2070 0721.
