AMIDST all the recent news about the Penarth Headland Link, we risk losing a much more modest pedestrian/ cycle walkway, which will be of much greater benefit to the people of Penarth and to the environment.
The plans for the new sports village include a cycle/footbridge across the Ely.
This would not only allow people to walk/cycle from Penarth to the sports village, it would also create a safe, pleasant cycle/pedestrian route from Penarth to Cardiff (connecting Penarth to the Taff Trail) and to the Bay.
I know many people who would commute to Cardiff by bike if a safe route existed.
Unfortunately, it now looks as if we"ll get a sports village but no bridge, because, despite all the surrounding development, no-one is prepared to pay for it.
Surely, between them, the Vale, Cardiff, the Assembly and the developers can find the money to build a bridge which has so many obvious benefits, and provides one of the few solutions to increasing traffic congestion?
Since the main beneficiaries of the bridge will be in the Vale, is anyone in the Vale council prepared to provide some leadership to get the job done?
Because it"s time for some bridge building!
