'Our design will be in keeping'

THE DEVELOPER who has submitted plans to build 24 apartments on Plymouth Road has hit back at critics of his scheme.

The Plymouth Road Action Group (PRAG) said last week that the building design resembles the "Starship Enterprise."

Grant Maunder of Insight said: "We accept that the design is modern and as result, the views of individuals such as Mr Mellor and his group were anticipated.

"We suspect that the fine Victorian buildings to which he refers, many of which are now Grade-II listed, were not to everyone's taste at the time of their construction.

"The design is a result of detailed consultation with not only the Vale Planning Department but the Design Commission for Wales.

"The art deco style of the Washington building directly opposite the site provides an excellent reference point and - contrary to Mr Mellor's assertions - puts the proposed building in context.

"The design reflects the need for privacy for residents of Cwrt Jubilee and Roxborough Court and the building's proximity to the conservation area," he added.

"We are committed to creating an exciting, modern building. We have no intention of following the path of many developers in creating more retro urban tat."

Mr Maunder added: "Mr Mellor's suggestion that the building constitutes an extension of the town centre is factually incorrect, as the current building already has a commercial use.

"In addition, the proposed building is white, not grey.

"Parking has been carefully considered and is more generously provided for than the recently constructed Cwrt Jubilee."
