• Friends of St Lawrence service next month

• Penarth raised the roof for Losotho

  THE visit of Godfrey Kakande head of Teyateyaneng Junior Academy is over but with thanks to the people of Penarth and the hard work of the Penarth and District Lesotho Trust we have succeeded in raising sufficient funds to buy the materials for the roof of the unfinished classroom block. Godfrey Kakande who was an international goalkeeper with Uganda and his favourite story is of the international with Zimbabwe and in the penalty shoot out at the end of a drawn game made a great save and then he succeeded to win the game taking the final penalty kick himself. Such character and determination enabled him to leave his good teaching post and set up this school, with its large percentage of orphans, which now with the co-operation of the Lesothan government and the help of PADLT, he is creating on its barren site. The visit had a busy schedule which necessitated many revisions which was managed by Lesley Cox, chair of PADLT. The timetable included visits to Victoria, St Fagans, Fairfield and Machen Primary schools, Stanwell Comprehensive School and Ystrad Mynach College and UWIC plus a visit to Llandough Hospital and also to the National Assembly where he met Assembly Members Jane Hutt and Vaughan Gething. Apart from church visits to All Saints Church and Stanwell Road Baptist and the Youth Group in Tabernacle one of the highlights was the Songs of Praise which was part of the Big God Tent and the Penarth Summer Festival.  Mr Kakande was interviewed by the Rev John James and also observed the formal presentation of the Annual Penarth Cytžn Fun Run cheque of £964 from Captain Steve Mayo, chair of Penarth Cytun to Mrs Lesley Cox. This cheque and the proceeds of other events and many generous donations enabled the treasurer of PADLT to declare that we had indeed sufficient funds to raise the roof of the classroom block. Mr Kakande said 'Koaliboa' which means thank you to everyone for their support. The challenges remain to bring electricity and other facilities to the school plus additional buildings. The dream that Mr Kakande has, lives on. A review of the situation took place in the farewell party last Saturday in the home of Mr and Mrs Flynn. They had prepared a beautiful supper for Mr Kakande and the Trustees of PADLT. Holly Flynn will be going as the youngest member of the Stanwell Comprehensive School visit 2012 to Lesotho which departs on Wednesday August 1. Andrew Graham will lead the group and his mother Tracey Graham will be the driver. In the great plan Holly will be the leader of the 2014 school visit to Lesotho. Will the dream that Godrey Kakande has be fulfilled by then? The Trustees of PADLT with the support of the other members of the Trust and with the generous help of the schools, churches, hospitals, colleges and the people of Penarth will be making every effort to ensure that it does.
