Infantryman is top gun
TOP SHOT: Private Simon Fairhurst.
TOP SHOT: Private Simon Fairhurst.

PRIVATE Simon Fairhurst is the top shot in his 58-strong platoon. After completing the tough six-month Combat Infantryman's Course in Catterick, Simon, 19, from Dinas Powys, was declared the top shot by his platoon commander, Captain Alex McDougall, who said: "Private Fairhurst's shooting scores were consistently the highest over the six month course.

"That's an impressive achievement, a particularly important one for an infantryman."

During his school years at St Cyres, Simon was a keen footballer and rugby player.

He said: "I really enjoyed the course, especially the weapon handling and shooting on the ranges.

"When I get to my battalion, I think I can continue to improve on my shooting skills."

Simon was presented with his award on May 2, at his Pass Out Parade at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick. Proud parents, Paul and Jenny, were in the audience.

After some well-earned leave Simon will join his new unit, 2 Royal Welsh, who are currently based in Tidworth following a recent tour in Iraq.
