Tennis elbows its way to the front

It’s that time of year when for some reason it is assumed that the whole of these islands develops a nasty case of “Murray Mania”, becomes raving tennis fans and leaves our houses in search of the nearest tennis court to practice our serves and volleys and drop shots and other tennis terms that I’m not familiar with.

I’m not sure we’re that bothered, or maybe it’s just me.

I can recall the days (a long time ago), when it was Wimbledon time and even though for the other 50 days of the year I paid little or no attention to anything that happens in the tennis world, for some reason I knew all the players and it was an exciting time of the year.

Nowadays I’m still paying no attention to anything that happens in the tennis world but apart from the obvious exceptions I haven’t got a clue who anyone is.

So I’ll be watching for a few minutes while the kettle boils and there’ll be some random person smacking balls around and I’ll then later discover that they are number 2 in the world and unbeaten for months.

It’s one of those occasions that you feel you should be watching just because it’s a major sporting tournament but having said that sometimes you do need to other things like re-arrange the fridge or take the dog for a walk and for those of us who don’t have a dog it’s not always easy.
