Snub the Facebook chart campaign this Christmas

You may remember this time last year when a bunch of unhappy people got a Facebook campaign going to stop Alexandra Burke reaching number one at Christmas with “Hallelujah”.

They were urging us with all of their hearts to download Jeff Buckley’s version rather than the X-Factor version because, despite the song having been covered hundreds of times over the years they couldn’t stand it getting the X-Factor treatment.

It didn’t work, and as it turned Ms Burke did a half-decent job.

Fast forward twelve months and it’s happening again, only this year it’s a Rage Against The Machine song that’s been nominated as the song to stop the rot.

Quite how it was decided that they would be the lucky recipients of a few royalties I don’t know.

There’s a Facebook group (what else could it be?) signing up people who then show their support against the dark side by downloading the song.

Those who have joined up say that they don’t want Simon Cowell dictating what the Christmas number one will be.

To that end most of them are downloading a song they probably won’t like by a band they may never have heard of because someone else has told them to.

And the difference is…not very much actually.

Here’s an idea, rather than worrying about being the guardians of the nation’s musical tastes (which is a stressful job), why not take the money you would have spent on downloading something you don’t really want and putting it in the nearest charity tin.

Now that would be a bit of Christmas spirit.

All is futile, it just puts more cash into Mr Colwells pockets, what we need is a campaign to rid the TV screens of Z factors, Dancing idiots and Big Brother and other unreality programs. Consign them to some obscure SKY channel where you can record them Chris :) It should not bother us at all, as these programs are for audiences of 8yr olds and under, not adults who have better things to do on a Saturday night.... I doubt a single male bought or downloaded anything from X factor...
