THIS month’s Llan Acoustic event sees The Chartists grace the Llanhilleth Miners’ Institute next week on Thursday, May 10.
In 1979, 140 years after some 5,000 Chartists marched on Newport in last large-scale armed rebellion against authority in mainland Britain, musician Wynford Jones wanted to tell the story in words and song.
Working with fellow musicians from Islwyn Folk Club, an album was produced which was played in its entirety on BBC Radio 2’s Folk on 2. Now more than 30 years later The Chartists are back.
Local history societies, together with music venues, have shown a great interest in them so the group have decided to recreate the performance.
The night at Llanhilleth Miners’ Institute begins with an open mic at 8pm with the band on stage about an hour later. Entry costs £3.
