Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has been put in charge of this year’s Meltdown Festival.

The annual event at the Southbank Centre has seen some of music’s biggest names, including David Bowie, Patti Smith and Jarvis Cocker, organise a series of gigs by their favourite performers.

David’s version will take place at the Southbank Centre in August with the line-up still to be announced.

He said: ” This is going to be exciting! I plan to invite performers I’ve seen – and I do get out – and others I’ve missed or have dreamed of seeing. It’s going to be a bit of fun puzzle-solving I imagine – seeing who’s interested, who is available and what venues at Southbank Centre are appropriate. I really hope to find things that take this beyond sit-down concerts as well – but of course I’m speaking way too early as I’m still working on my wish list.”

New York art rockers Talking Heads came out of the city’s punk scene and were critical favourites, as well as scoring worldwide hits with Once In A Lifetime and Road To Nowhere.
