Sherlock and The X Factor were among the shows recognised at an awards ceremony celebrating the best behind-the-scenes work on TV last year.

The BBC take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories won for editing and sound in the fiction category at the British Academy Television Craft Awards.

There was also success for ITV, with staff who worked on The X Factor taking the entertainment craft team award – pipping rivals The Voice and Strictly Come Dancing.

Supernatural horror series Penny Dreadful won accolades for production design, make up and hair design and original music.

Sally Wainwright won the drama writer category for her police thriller Happy Valley. Mackenzie Crook, the former The Office actor, prevailed in the comedy writing section for Detectorists, in which he also starred.

Doctor Who was successful in the special, visual & graphic effects category.

Vision mixer Hilary Briegel was presented with the special award at the event for her work across productions including Absolutely Fabulous, Only Fools And Horses, Newsnight, the Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games.

Last night’s ceremony was held at The Brewery in the City of London and hosted by Episodes star Stephen Mangan.
