THE Dinas Powys Players are rehearsing Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall’s 1960s tale of northern life, for their three-act play ‘Billy Liar’ presentation at the Parish Hall, Britway Road, Dinas Powys on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 10, 11 and 12.

Less than dedicated to his job of 19 years and bored with his working class family background, undertaker's clerk Billy Fisher takes refuge in his own invented world.

An energetic imagination makes life tolerable – and well nigh intolerable for all around him. He lies his way out of every situation and making any promise that will extricate him from the present predicament and thereby creating ever more tortuous entanglement for the immediate future.

This earthy and hilarious play has been one of the greatest successes of post-war years. As Billy Fisher, Albert Finney made his first stage triumph in September 1960 at the Cambridge Theatre in the West End and Sir Tom Courtenay later played the part in the film version.

The Dinas Powys Players have assembled a well balanced cast of young and older members for their production and are particularly pleased to be able to announce once again the appearances of our younger talented actors Andrew Gibbons, in the lead role of Billy Fisher with Nicky Marsh and Tara Williams as his much lied to girlfriends. The group also welcomes two further young actors Natalie Eddins (one more of Billy’s many girlfriends) and Dave Mc Cann as Billy's loyal and long suffering work mate – both acting with the Dinas Powys Players for the first time.

Longer established group members – Sue Gibbons, Graham Russell and Ann Croom complete the cast as Billy’s mum, dad and grandmother – the latter named member having first appeared in ‘Billy Liar’ as Grandma some 50 years ago this year, together with Eileen Carryer who stage managed that production and is now once again directing for the Players.
