ENVIRONMENTAL group Gwyrddio Penarth Greening will be holding its annual Apple Day community event next weekend.

This year’s Apple Day will take place on Sunday, October 26, from 11am until 3pm, and is again being held in Belle Vue Park.

Apple Day was first launched by the environmental charity Common Ground in 1990 and the idea has spread rapidly with communities and groups across the country holding Apple Day events throughout October.

The aim of these events is to bring communities together to celebrate the variety and richness of local produce and their importance to local distinctiveness.

Once again, a key feature of the day will be the apple press for juicing apples and a display of varieties grown in the town and surrounding area. The organisers are encouraging people to bring along apples from their gardens to be juiced, tasted and added to the display. This year has unfortunately seen a very poor crop on local trees with very little call on GPG volunteers to collect surplus fruit, so all donations of fruit on the day would be very helpful.

There will also be local cider tastings, stalls offering a range of handmade chutneys and preserves, recipe swaps and much more. A cafe service and lunchtime snacks will also be available.

Entrance to the event is free and open to all. For more information visit www.gpgpenarth.org.uk or contact as.penarth@gmail.com

The organisers would like to thank the ‘Friends of Belle Vue Park’ for their support.
