AN EXHIITION marking the 100 year anniversary of the beginning of World War One is opening at Art Central this month.

From Monday, November 17 the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s art gallery is hosting an exhibition of remembrance which will provide a variety of interesting, stimulating and thought-provoking pieces.

The exhibit includes work by a selection of artists and local stories that include artist Suzanne Grover who is showing a triptych of her family members in tribute to the Great War.

There is also an interactive display by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) entitled "Hope in the Great War" all transporting visitors back in time to 100 years ago.

Another featured artist will be Cardiff based photographer Jon Poutney, who will be showing monochrome photographs of First Word War memorials and monuments from across the Vale of Glamorgan.

Poutney has photographed these iconic memorials using a 1930’s German "Voigtlander" camera, gifted to his grandfather by an Italian prisoner of war during World War II.

The camera produces beautiful nostalgic photographs that create a reflective and invaluable visual story for many years to come.

Accompanying Poutney will be Welsh ceramicist Tracey Baker. Taking inspiration from the war horses used in battle during World War One, Baker creates hauntingly beautiful and captivating sculptural artworks.

The RNLI "Hope in the Great War" exhibition tells the story of six heroic rescues, placing the viewer in the shoes of those living along the UK and Irish coast, with family friendly, interactive displays.

All ages will be captivated by the stimulating and illuminating displays, whilst learning about the heritage of the local and surrounding area.

"Remembering the Great War" will be on display at Art Central from Monday, November 17 until January 3 and offers an opportunity to reflect on and remember those lives affected by the Great War, spanning 1914 to 1918.

The Gallery is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, and entry is free.
