THE next talk for the Flat Holm Society will be on foraging with Kirsten McEwen on Thursday, November 20 from 7pm until 9pm.

One of two sister islands located in the Bristol Channel, Flat Holm is a dedicated site of special scientific interest, with maritime sward, wind-blown scrub and farmed grasslands. One of the few places in Britain where the Wild Leek and the Wild Peony grow, it has a strange diversity of flora, partly due to the sixth century monks, farmers and the military that once inhabited it. Plants were either deliberately imported to be used for food or medicine, or accidently brought in on goods and personnel.

Kirsten McEwen will present the plants and fungi found on Flat Holm and discuss their use in food, medicine and folklore.

The talk will be held in Room 3 of The Kymin on Beach Road, Penarth. A donation of £2 for members and £3 for non members is kindly asked for. Refreshments will be available.
