THE Penarth Acoustic Club returns to The Room at the Top on Friday, January 16 for another evening of live music and verse.

The compact and intimate setting of the top floor of The Royal British Legion, Station Approach, has played host to Penarth’s latest and most exciting acoustic event since the club’s debut evening last November. “With the closure of the “Legion” scheduled for the end of January, it will be the last time the club plays at the venue” said co-founder Adrian Lewis, “so we’ve organised a tremendous line-up to go out in style”.

The incredible blues harpist Tony Thompson will be playing alongside the internationally acclaimed John Lewis on guitar and vocals. It was well over 20 years ago when these two Penarth favourites first took to the stage together at the old Penarth Folk/Blues club. At that time, they were an instant hit with the audience and with the passing of time; the growth in their musical virtuosity can only be described as legendary.

Also playing will be the talented Glenn Watkins from Swansea. Well known in and around the Swansea area, Glenn has been delighting followers of the live music scene since his days with popular 80’s cover band “Livewire”. With a smooth voice and crisp guitar playing, Glenn puts his own take on many popular songs as well as performing his own compositions.

Poetry reading will be provided by Cardiff based writer Claire Syder. An experienced performance poet with a direct and earthy style suffused with humour and sharp insights, Claire has performed across the UK and also in New York City. Her collection of poetry “Time Cracks Open the Universe” has been well received and she has also been published in several anthologies.

The club’s hosts, Adrian Lewis, Phil Nedin and Nick Treharne will provide support and variety for another not to be missed night.

“It’s clear that the music lovers of Penarth have really appreciated the format and cosy surroundings that the club has provided so far”, said Adrian, “with all tickets for both previous evenings selling out fast. We’d like to express our thanks and gratitude to all the staff at the “Legion” who have made it possible for us to host the club at the venue to date”.

The club hopes to spread its acoustic roots to a new venue in the coming months, and will also be looking to add “stand up” comedy to its already excellent mix of acoustic cabaret whilst maintaining the unique atmosphere that it has developed.

The Penarth Acoustic Club will open at 7.30pm with performances beginning around 8.15pm. With seating for just 35 people, it is strongly advised to purchase your ticket, which cost £5 each, in advance, with proceeds going back into the club.
