The Penarth Times has teamed up with St David’s Hall to offer one lucky reader the chance to experience the magnificence of 19th century Paris for a stunning performance of Verdi La Traviata.

In this exclusive competition you will be able to appear in the first act of this breathtaking opera on March 8 then watch the show from the best seats in the house.

We have teamed up with the National Concert Hall of Wales and the award-winning Ellen Kent Productions to offer one lucky reader (and a guest of choice) this truly unique experience in appearing as an extra in the ballroom scene.

Plus, once you’ve completed your memorable moment onstage you’ll be able to watch the rest of the show from the best seats in the house with a pair of top-price tickets.

There’s even more prizes up for grabs too! The winner will also receive a copy of the novel La Dame aux Camélias by the iconic writer Alexandre Dumas (upon which this tragic tale of searing passion was originally based upon) and a tour programme.

La Traviata tells the tale of consumptive courtesan Violetta, and the portrayal of her story features some of Verdi’s finest work. The Brindisi remains the best known drinking song in opera, whilst Un Di Felice is a beautiful duet. Plus, Violetta’s haunting aria Addio Del Passato is guaranteed to toy with your emotions.

To be in with a chance of winning these fantastic prizes, please answer the following question:

Q. What is the name of the Verdi opera starring Violetta which is to appear at St David’s Hall?

Please e-mail your entries to SDHpress@cardiff.gov.uk with your name and contact details by Monday, March 2.

Also appearing at the Theatre will be Verdi Rigoletto on Saturday, March 7, which is a masterpiece renowned for its sumptuous sets and colourful costumes.

Upon its premier in 1850, censors tried to ban it due to its spectacular portrayal of decadence in Renaissance Italy and scenes of nudity. Yet, it’s now rightly regarded as a classic amongst opera fans.

Based on a play written by Victor Hugo of Les Misérables fame, this plush production features acclaimed international soloists, plus a pair of regal greyhounds and even a magnificent golden eagle.
