AUTHOR of Mammon’s Kingdom: An Essay on Britain, Now, will be discussing the book at All Saints Church in Victoria Square.

David Marquand will discuss his work, answer audience questions and sign copies of the book on Thursday, April 9.

David will be introduced by local MP Stephen Doughty and the discussion facilitated by distinguished Penarth resident Hywel Ceri Jones, formerly of the European Commission.

David Marquand, now living in Penarth on a part-time basis, was MP for Ashfield from 1966 to 1977 before working as chief advisor to Roy Jenkins.

He was later one of the founder members of the SDP before rejoining the Labour Party in the mid 90s.

David is a leading political thinker and academic, currently holding the position of visiting fellow at Oxford University and honorary professor of Politics at Sheffield University.

The Times Literary Supplement’s review of ‘Mammon’s Kingdom’ comments “Numerous accounts have been written of the transition from collectivism to individualism in post-war Britain. The Marquand version is first-class and a pleasure to read. Stylish, panoramic and multi-dimensional, it abounds with insights.

“The problem now, as Marquand recognises, is that we cannot live without capitalism, but abhor the predatory capitalism of a globalised economy. The task of the Centre Left, therefore, is to find a way of taming capitalism to ensure that it serves the common good again. Can it be done? The obstacles are formidable but as David Marquand insists, the moral imperative holds good. The attempt has to be made.”

Tickets cost £5 which includes a glass of wine and a £2.50 reduction on the price of the book. Tickets are available from Griffin Books or you can call them on 02920 706455. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
