PENARTH Songwriters' Circle returns on Friday, June 26, with an eclectic mix of songwriting talent.

Performing on the night will be Pontypridd pianist and singer songwriter Matthew Fredrick who will take to the stage alongside Cowbridge born folk siren Greta Isaac and London based County/Americana singer and guitarist Simon Stanley Ward.

The ever popular bi-monthly event continues to attract some of the finest songwriting talent around to perform at the intimate surroundings of All Saints Church Hall, Penarth.

As the pianist, singer and songwriter with Pontypridd band ‘Climbing Trees’, Matthew Frederick is proving himself to be a prolific and immensely talented artist. After forming the band in 2011 ‘Climbing Trees’ soon came to the attention of BBC Radio Wales who championed their blend of folk, country and Americana (a style the band themselves call ‘Cymrucana’).

They were awarded ‘Welsh Artist of the Week’ and selected as one of the 12 BBC Horizons acts for 2014–15. More recently Frederick has also found the time to write, record and release his debut solo album ‘Live at Long Row’ which blends a childhood love of the early works of Elton John and Billy Joel with more recent influences including Ben Folds.

Greta Isaac plays with an astonishing maturity for someone aged just 19. Her sound is reminiscent of Laura Marling and Joni Mitchell, with softly strummed acoustic guitar and her pure, earnest voice.

There is a fragility to Isaac’s singing that moves and enchants the listener, with her lyrics of love, lost and found. Having played S?n Festival as well as the Green Man Festival, she is making a name for herself in Wales and further afield.

Now based in London her first independently released EP, “Down by the Water”, received wide acclaim and embodies her love of folk and Americana. The follow up EP, ‘Oh Babe’ attracted even more attention and regular support from BBC Radio Wales’ Bethan Elfyn amongst others.

Simon Stanley Ward is a 28-year-old singer and songwriter from London who has become a prominent fixture on London’s growing Americana scene over the past few years.

After releasing his debut solo EP ‘Myself To Blame’ in 2012 he toured the USA playing shows in Nashville. He has recently released his debut solo album prompting some excellent reviews from national music magazines.

Tickets are available in advance from Pencerdd Music, Station Approach, Penarth, and Spillers Records, Cardiff costing £8 in advance or £10 on the door.

Doors open at 7.30pm with performance starting at 8.15pm.
