WELSH folk music is coming to St David's Hall, Cardiff, when Calan an The Gentle Good perform in the L3 Lounge.

The two leading lights on the scene will share the stage on Tuesday, September 22.

Since forming in 2006, Calan have released three critically acclaimed albums (Bling, Jonah and the recently released Dinas) and established a growing reputation on the festival circuit. They are even making an impact across the pond too and are currently enjoying their second tour of the United States and Canada. Plus, next month they will be joining Bryn Terfel at the Royal Albert Hall.

The young five-piece give a fresh, vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music whilst mixing their approach with a lively, contemporary sound. With their sparkling melodies, foot-tapping tunes and spirited performances of Welsh step dancing; Calan breathe new life into the old traditions.

Furthermore, the feel-good factor of their music encapsulates a unique instrumental blend of accordion, fiddle and guitar accompanied by the unmistakably Welsh sound of pipes, harps and even clogs. Their fast-paced arrangements all melt into the most beautiful and haunting harmonies.

Welsh solo artist The Gentle Good – the stage-name of Gareth Bonello – will also be performing a captivating set. The versatile songwriter draws on the language, poetry and melodies of his native country to create a beautiful modern folk music in both Welsh and English. Like Calan, Gareth has already performed all over the world from car parks in Texas to quaysides in Lorient and even at the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.

His latest astonishing output saw Gareth travel to China to create an album entitled Y Bardd Anfarwol (translated as The Immortal Bard), which fuses Chinese and Welsh traditional music and revolves around the life of the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai. Deservedly, his work received widespread critical praise and led to him winning the Welsh Album of the Year award at the 2014 National Eisteddfod.

Tickets to the evening cost £12 in advance and £14 on the day (plus a £2.95 Ticket Service Charge per transaction and an optional 95p postage fee).
