TONIGHT artist Haf Weighton will have her work on display at two venues in Penarth.

Originally from Cardiff, Haf has lived in Australia, Canada and London for the past 20 years. Missing the sea and wanting her children to learn Welsh, last August Haf moved to Penarth, with her two children and husband, and has set herself up in a studio in the seaside town.

This is the first time Haf has shown her work in Wales for 15 years, and will have her work on display at Foxy's, Penarth and the Bottle Shop.

She taught art at Highgate Wood School in London for the past 10 years. Just a few minutes from where the famous Welsh artist. Kyffin Williams. taught art in Highgate before he returned to Wales.

Haf’s textiles are made using paint, print, hand and free motion embroidery. She has a keen interest in architecture and much of her work documents buildings that are significant to her.

A fellow Welsh speaker, Branwen Williams happened to buy a piece from the bottle shop originally inspired by a recent commission from Llandough Hospital.

"It’s a bit strange that it’s the hospital, but I do love the colours and it fits in very well in my kitchen".

Another Penarth resident, originally from Istanbul, Yeliz Richards bought a piece inspired by the Turkish area of London known as Green Lanes.

Yeliz said: "I often go all the way from Penarth to Green Lanes just to eat the food at well known restaurant Antipellier. This piece reminds me of home."

Talking about her work Haf Weighton said: "Despite the fact that I have trained traditionally in textiles and fashion, I like to break the rules. I don’t tend to stitch straight lines and I like to expose the back of my work to onlookers as I often find this side of my work to be more beautiful than the intentional images on the front."

The exhibition at Foxy's Penarth will open at 6pm and then at 8pm at the Bottle Shop. The Bottle Shop exhibition will be hosted by Penarth's Analogue Music Club, run by Ceri Evans.
