PENARTH Pier Pavilion will become the first site in Wales for a major site-specific installation by award winning artist Liz West.

Liz West will present her installation, called Solstice Ritual from June 17 to July 10.

Liz West creates vivid environments that mix luminous colour and radiant light.

Working across a variety of mediums, West aims to provoke a heightened sensory awareness in the viewer through her works. She is interested in exploring how sensory phenomena can invoke psychological and physical responses that tap into our own deeply entrenched relationships to colour.

West's investigation into the relationship between colour and light is often realised through an engagement between materiality and a given site. Within physical and architectural space, West uses light as a material that radiates outside of its boundaries and containers.

West takes a cue from Robert Irwin’s ongoing conversations with author Lawrence Weschler, looking at how the physical presence of something very slight can transcend into a phenomenal presence as opposed to an image.

For Summer Solstice, West uses that slight alteration of non-image to investigate these ideas. In this unique commission for Penarth Pier Pavilion, West makes a slight but significant alteration to the experience of the Gallery space, working with the windows of the 1930’s art deco Pavilion to create an environment where audiences perception of the building is dramatically altered through her highlighting of the effect of light within the space.

The exhibition is supported by Arts Council of Wales.
