AT THE next All Saints Church lunchtime recital on Monday, October 10, will be a programme of music from the early renaissance.

In a welcome return to the venue Luke Starkey will be playing the lute and August Guan will play the organ and virginal. They will talk about their instruments and give insightful introductions to the music they will perform by Italian and British composers of the 16th century.

August is the organist and choirmaster at All Saints Church and studied musical direction and composition at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, where he graduated with a distinction. At present, he is researching 18th century British keyboard arrangements for his PhD under Dr David Ponsford's supervision at Cardiff University, dividing his time equally between performance and scholarship.

Luke Starkey studied composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, his tutors including amongst others, Peter Reynolds and Tim Raymond. During his studies, his works were performed by ensembles such as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Symphony Orchestra, the Millennium Ensemble, and the Arditti Quartet. He was also winner of the Mervyn Burtch Composition Prize in 2009.

Luke has given recitals and concerts throughout Cardiff and South Wales, especially the regular lunchtime concerts at National Museum Wales, Cardiff.

The musicians will perform from 1pm to 2pm.

Music at Lunchtime at All Saints Church in Penarth has increased in popularity since its inception in July 2013. Artists perform free of charge and audiences are not charged for entry although many choose to show their appreciation by making donations.

These are gratefully accepted by All Saints Church and go towards the recently launched organ restoration fund. The lunchtime recitals are informal, friendly events. The music is enjoyed by many on the gallery whilst partaking of their lunch; teas and coffees are provided.

Recitals continue until November 28 with the exception of October 31 when a special celebratory Music at Lunchtime, featuring international opera star Rebecca Evans and others will be held on what will be the 125th anniversary of the consecration of All Saints Church.

Tickets, at £10, for this concert along with a cheese and wine reception are available from the All Saints parish office on 029 7070 3170, Foxy’s Deli and Griffin Books.

Further information on the celebratory concert and all musical events held at All Saints Church can be obtained from the parish administrator, Dafydd G Jones on 029 7070 3170 or email admin@allsaintspenarth.org.uk
