Tories take the lead in Vale

THE Conservatives are to lead the Vale of Glamorgan Council following last week's local elections.

Tory Leader David Cameron flew to the Vale on Friday morning to congratulate his local party members on their win.

Encouraging the new councillors to keep Council Tax as low as possible and work towards tackling issues such as crime on the streets, he said: "Let's take it to the general election."

The Conservatives won 25 seats - one more than the 24 they needed to achieve overall control.

Labour casualties in Penarth were Rhiannon Birch and Nigel Gibbs in the Cornerswell Ward, who were replaced by the Conservatives' John Fraser and Dorothy Turne.

Lis Burnett also lost out in St Augustine's ward, her Labour seat being picked up by Sophie Williams for the Tories.

It means Janice Birch and Mark Wilson are the only Labour councillors for the Penarth area.

Dinas Powys residents re-elected all four Plaid representatives, and Sully and Llandough's Conservative councillors also remained in place.
