A PENARTH restaurant has been shortlisted as a frontrunner for a prestigious industry-guide award.

The Fig Tree is in the running to be named a winner in The Good Food Guide’s Readers’ Restaurant of the Year Awards.

The awards champion local eateries and recognise great food and service at restaurants, pubs and cafes across the UK.

People are invited to nominate their favourite local establishment across ten UK regions.

Thousands of entries have been received but the Fig Tree has been shortlisted alongside just four others in Wales – including fellow Vale restaurant Bar 44 in Cowbridge.

Fig Tree owner Mike Caplan- Hill said it was “amazing news”.

“This is a huge honour and it is down to our wonderfully supportive and loyal customers,” he said.

“There is still a slight possibility that we may actually win this incredibly prestigious award. But but we need more votes.

“Thank you to everyone who has voted so far.”

The regional winners will be announced in May 2013 and the overall winner of Readers’ Restaurant of the Year for 2014 will be announced at a London awards ceremony in June.

The closing date for nominations is April 14.
