THE Flat Holm Society is appealing for help to take over full running of the local landmark.
The small island just off the coast of Penarth has seen much turmoil in its long history.
Viking pirates went there, as did King Harold's mother after her son was killed at the Battle of Hastings. Allegedly, two knights who murdered Thomas A'Beckett fled there. Minor conflicts erupted over the supply of coal for the lighthouse in the 1700s.
The island was fortified in Victorian times against the threat of a French invasion and latterly in WW2.
The island has long been a favourite place for school parties who learn so much in this living museum as well as day trippers who want an interesting day out.
But Flat Holm is now facing a fresh period of turmoil with Cardiff Council, who manage the Flat Holm Project, proposing to pass responsibility on to another body.
For many years the Flat Holm Society, a local organisation, has been supporting the work on the island by proving knowledgeable tour guides, organising working days and weekends and fund raising to help the project.
The society is aiming to step up, but they need help.
Anyone who can assist in the roles of management, marketing, financial management, community knowledge, partnership, working managing assets, human resources, business planning, legal fund raising is urged to get in touch.
The Flat Holm Society want to keep the island in local hands. Any help would be appreciated.
