MOTORISTS in and around Penarth faced delays and diversions this week as major roadworks to replace gas mains got underway. And traders slammed the ill-timing of the work saying it will affect tourism at the height of the summer season.

The work started in Penarth town centre on Sunday (June23) as part of a scheme that will see the replacement of up to 12km of old gas mains in the town. Wales and West Utilities say the scheme is due to last up to 12 weeks.

The roadworks form part of a multi-million pound 30-year replacement programme across Wales and the south west of England. The work involves replacing old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings with highly durable, non-corroding plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.

In a statement Wales and West Utilities said: “We are carrying out essential mains replacement work on Windsor Road and Windsor Terrace in Penarth which will help ensure the safe and secure supply of gas to homes and businesses in the area for years to come. The work is due to take 12 weeks to complete."

"To ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and the work force, and in order to maintain access to the town centre during the work, there are lane closures in place on Windsor Road and Windsor Terrace. All diversionary routes are clearly signposted and are part of a traffic management plan which has been fully agreed by the local highways authority."

Wales & West Utilities added: "In planning the work and associated traffic management, we have liaised closely with the local authority, Penarth Town Council, Cardiff Bus and other key stakeholders. We have also held drop in surgeries for local residents and businesses to inform them of our plans and also allow them to raise any concerns they may have."
