Battle of Britain Remembrance Service
12:02pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
LAST weekend saw the remembrance of the Battle of Britain. This was a Second World War air campaign waged by the German Air Force against the United Kingdom during the summer and autumn of 1940.
The Battle of Britain was the first major campaign to be fought entirely by air forces. The failure of Germany to achieve its objectives of destroying Britain's air defences, or forcing Britain to negotiate an armistice or an outright surrender, is considered its first major defeat and a crucial turning point in the Second World War.
Winston Churchill summed up the effect of the battle with the words, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”.
A remembrance service is held at the cenotaph in Alexander Gardens to commemorate this Battle. This took place on Sunday, September 15, and even though it rained, lots of people paid their respects.
This is also the weekend that the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) raises funds for their organisation. They are largest single Service membership organisation and the longest standing registered service charity that provides welfare support to the RAF Family - providing friendship, help and support to current and former members of the Royal Air Force and their dependants.
You may have seen members of the Penarth branch and cadets from 1148 Air Cadet Squadron raising funds. They would like to thank everyone for the money donated and the help provided to the Association. Please feel free to pop to the RAFA club (next to Blockbusters on Windsor Road) as they are looking for new patrons.
If you have a spirit for adventure, 1148 Squadron has vacancies for boys and girls between 13-18 years old. The Squadron parade on Mondays and Wednesdays 7pm-9.30pm next to Dingle Road train station.
