CHRISTMAS has come to Penarth, as the town was lit up with festive cheer to welcome in the holiday season.

Visits from guests weatherman Derek Brockway, TV and radio presenter Fran Donovan and Father Christmas himself helped cement the big Christmas lights switch on as one of the most memorable Penarth has ever seen.

Prior to the switch on, which took place on Saturday, November 31, entertainment was provided from the stage by the Salvation Army, Tabs, Performing Arts Academy, the Siren Sisters and Rock Choir.

Mayor Neil Thomas said: "This had to be one of the most memorable Christmas events in Penarth for many years, and with many hundreds of people coming to the Town Centre for up to three hours or more on a very cold afternoon,

"I think that this showed just how much both young people and their parents thoroughly enjoyed the programme of events and the Grand Parade.

"We were incredibly fortunate this year to have two TV celebrities in Fran Donovan and Derek Brockway who turned on the lights the Deputy Town Mayor. Derek presented a large bouquet of flowers to Fran from the Town Council as a thanks you for her continued support of the event."

A spokesman for the town council said: "The Christmas light switch on event in Penarth is fast becoming renowned as one of the biggest and best locally which is wonderfully supported by local residents.

"From the lively and colourful parade to the dancers, singers and all the entertainers that performed throughout the afternoon. The Town Council would like to thank all the wonderful people of the town who came and supported the Christmas Celebrations."

The Christmas Festival was further supported by town traders who provided the crowds with a wonderful selection of street food and refreshments.

Penarth Town Council said it wanted to thank everyone who helped out in making the event such a success.

A collection taken during the afternoon for the Penarth Christmas Fund will go towards providing for those in need in the town. On Sunday, December 15, Penarth Round Table members will be delivering parcels to those in need.
