TWO wards remain closed to visitors at University Hospital Llandough following an outbreak of norovirus.

The public are being asked to continue with their help to stop the spread of norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, in hospitals by only visiting if absolutely necessary over the coming weeks.

Whilst the situation is improving, two hospitals within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) still have a number of suspected cases of the bug.

Two wards remain closed at University Hospital Llandough and parts of two wards in University Hospital of Wales are still affected by the virus and remain closed.

Dr Eleri Davies, the director for infection prevention and control at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, thanked the public for co-operating with hospital visits and reminded people who have experienced the symptoms to stay away from hospital’s and health centres for at least 48 hours.

“It is very difficult to stop the spread of norovirus once it is in hospital so we are asking the public to help support us by restricting visiting wards to what is absolutely necessary.

“If you are visiting friends or family in hospital then please heed the advice at the entrances to wards and practice good hand hygiene.

“If you have an outpatient appointment and are showing no signs of the virus, please attend your appointment as planned.”

Dr Davies added, “If you are suffering from symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting and need to see a GP or attend hospital please inform your surgery or hospital about your symptoms, ideally by telephone before you attend.”
