Power was restored to Penarth town centre around 8pm tonight after nearly four hours without electricity.

Western Power said that 90 customers, including town centre businesses and local residents, had been affected by the power cut that started around 4pm.

Many shops were forcd to close early as they had no electricity to use the tills or any of the other equipment, while takeaways on Glebe Street were also hard hit as they were unable to cook food.

*UPDATE 6pm*
Western Power engineers have confirmed the power cut was caused by a 'fault in the feeder pillar'.

Fitters have been called in to repair it, but it could take 'several hours' for power to be restored.

Takeaways along Glebe Street are all unable to serve hot food or take orders because of the power cut.

Sue Tasher, owner of The Pickled Pepper, said they had been experiencing power surges for four days and were unable to serve anyone.

"It's the worst night it could have happened as Fridays are out busiest," she said.

*UPDATE 5.30pm*

Western Power have apologised for the power cut and said that they hope electricity will be restored by 6.30pm.

A Western Power Distribution spokesman said: "We're sorry for the inconvenience. Our engineers are carrying out repairs and we aim to restore all power by 6.30pm."

Several Penarth businesses have been forced to close early as they have been unable to serve customers.

Thompson Butchers have also expressed concern that they could lose frozen produce.

Boots, Costa, Penarth Pets & Groomers, Hamptons and Thompson Butchers, Chris Capus, Hello Gorgeous hair salon and shops in Windsor Arcade have all been without power since around 4pm.

Other shops on Windsor Road, Glebe Street and Ludlow Lane have also been affected.
