A PENARTH charity shop worker is set to cycle 100km in one day as part of Red Cross Week.

Stuart Gillies will complete the challenge on a static bike outside Penarth's British Red Cross charity shop on Saturday, May 10.

The charity bike ride is part of a wider fundraising campaign that the Stanwell Road shop is taking part in.

The shop is also holding a week long raffle, featuring prizes including a two course lunch for two at Michelin starred chef James Sommerin's new restaurant at the Beachcliff redevelopment, in a bid to raise more than £500.

24 other local businesses have also donated prizes to the raffle that will be drawn at the end of Red Cross Week, which runs from May 4 until May 10.

Gemma Sawyer, manager of Penarth's British Red Cross shop, said that the aim of the week was to raise money and awareness about the charity's work.

She said that they had been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses to the raffle and that the fundraising campaign had already exceeded their expectations.

"We have done raffles before but never to this extent of prizes," she said.

"It started off as something small but just got bigger and bigger."

Stuart Gillies, a keen amateur triathlete, added that he had set himself the target of cycling 100km between 9am and 4pm on Saturday.

"I've probably cycled around 100km in the past so I think it's achievable, but I won't he finishing until I get to 100km,” he said.

To buy a raffle ticket or sponsor Stuart's cycling challenge pop into the charity shop on Stanwell Road.

Businesses that have donated vouchers and prizes to the raffle include: BDP Beverley Davies Penny, Seashore Grill, Waterloo Tea, SOHO, The Railway Hotel, David Lush Butchers, Penarth Pier Pavilion, Hi Plan Copyprint, Pro Health and Nutrition, Tesco, Sew Lovely, Bar 44, Enerchi, Jo’s Organics, Coffee No 1, Dear Doris, Windsor Fruit Store, Dave the Barber, A B Snell and Son, The Bike Shop, Alley Cat Ink, Lana Beautique, Windsor Gifts and Windsor Bookshop.
