GALE FORCE winds caused extensive damage across Penarth over the weekend with a shop sign injuring two people after it collapsed on them.

Several trees across Penarth were also blown over, blocking roads and pavements, while the beacon at Cliff Walk toppled over after snapping at its base.

On Saturday two people escaped serious injury after a shop sign above Kitchener and Thomas fell on them during estimated 60 mile an hour winds.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 12.50pm, with one elderly woman taken to hospital with minor injuries and the shop manager treated at the scene for cuts and bruises.

Dave Taylor, owner of Kitchener and Thomas on Windsor Road, said he was helping the woman who had been hit by the sign when the other half fell on him.

“It hit my left arm and I thought I had broken both my legs,” he said.

“I was shaking like a leaf afterwards.”

Fire Service crew attended the scene to make the area safe and police closed off part of Windsor Road to deal with the incident.

A South Wales Ambulance spokeswoman added that one rapid response vehicle and two emergency ambulances were also despatched to the scene.

An officer from the Vale Council’s building control team was also called out to inspect the building facade, and confirmed that it was safe and presented no further risk to the public.

The shop front has now been battened up and made water tight.
