PENARTH Leisure Centre’s swimming pool is set to remain closed until at least the end of May – more than three months after a fire broke out in the sauna.

The leisure centre suffered “extensive damage” after an accidental fire broke out in the health suite on Sunday, February 23.

Nobody was hurt by the fire, but the whole building was evacuated and a massive clear-up operation of smoke damage was launched.

Since then the gym and main hall have reopened, with classes returning to normal, while work has continued on cleaning and reopening the pool.

A Penarth Leisure Centre spokesman said: “There are ongoing meetings taking place between Parkwood Community Leisure and the Vale of Glamorgan Council in order to get the pool open for our valued customers as soon as possible.

“As a team, we'd like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding in this ongoing matter and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this is causing.”
