THE Only Kids Aloud choir travelled to Cape Town for a historic performance marking 20 years of democracy in South Africa.

Among the chorus were Zoe Mules, from Penarth, Rebekah West from Dinas Powys and Lucy Miles from Barry.

The 64 strong all Wales choir, whose members are aged between nine and 14, performed alongside the chorus and soloists from Cape Town Opera and received standing ovations from the South African audiences for their remarkable performances on both nights.

Sharing the platform with the children was multiple Grammy and Classical Brit winner Bryn Terfel.

The chorus will be joining forces with Cape Town Opera in July to perform ‘Spirit of Hope’ at the Llangollen International Festival, where they will be joined by Cardiff Singer of the World finalist, Welsh baritone, Gary Griffiths.

Speaking of their experiences Zoe Mules from Penarth said: "I really enjoyed raising money for this trip of my dreams by singing carols in local supermarkets with some of the other children from the choir which was great fun and we all got to know each other better.

"To have this opportunity to perform with Wales' best has just been superb and it's a chance of a lifetime that I'll never, ever forget!"

Lucy Miles of Barry said she has loved every minute over the past two years with Only Kids Aloud.

She said: "I am very grateful that I was chosen to be a part of it.

"I’m so lucky to have had the opportunity to sing with Bryn Terfel in Cape Town and I loved the trip to Robben Island. I would like to thank everyone who has made the trip possible’

Lucy managed to raise money for the trip through family and friends by setting up a weekly lottery, raffle and general donations.

Rebekah West, of Dinas Powys said: “A dream come true! It was an incredible experience to sing in the Artscape Theatre with the Cape Town Opera and Bryn Terfel.

"Cape Town is spectacular and I was amazed at the beautiful scenery with Table mountain towering beside the sea. I loved seeing penguins on the beach at Boulders Bay and visiting Robben Island where I learnt about Nelson Mandela’s life and imprisonment. It was a fantastic adventure.

"I would like to thank Only Men Aloud, the staff at Wales Millennium Centre and Cape Town opera for arranging the trip and also my friends, family and Dinas Powys Community Council for their kind gifts.”

Rebekah’s fundraising efforts included making 26 apple crumbles, giving 65 piano lessons and carol singing.
