DINAS Powys Lawn Tennis Club Juniors raised more than £450 for charity by holding their annual fundraising open day last month, May 19.

Lead by junior club captains Jack Thomas and Libby Smith the group organised an open tennis tournament, barbeque and raffle to add another £450 to their overall total of more than £1300 for Teenage Cancer Trust. The decision was taken by Jack and Libby to continue supporting the charity this year once again, because of the work the charity does to support young people living with cancer in their schools and the local community.

Sian Smith, fromDPLTA, said: "We decided to hold the charity open day this year to coincide with National Free Tennis Weekend to encourage as many people as possible to come along and have a go at a game of tennis. We had a brilliant time, the weather was amazing and the day was filled with fun and games, open touch tennis and a BBQ.

"We’d like to thank the local community and local businesses contributed to our raffle. We were so pleased to have raised another £450 for such a good cause. Thank you to everyone who came along and took part, I’d also like to add a special thank you to all the volunteer helpers on the day, and to Rob Walbyoff our club coach who led the tennis tournament, if anyone is interested in playing any further tennis at DPLTA please don't hesitate to contact Rob on 07931 665 431.”

Teenage Cancer Trust relies on donations and all money raised by the Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis Club Juniors will go towards the maintenance of the specialist Teenage Cancer Trust unit at University Hospital Wales, Cardiff, funding specialist staff and supporting free cancer awareness sessions the charity runs in schools, colleges and universities across the region. Every £25 of the money that they have raised could be used to provide a specialist nurse at our unit in Cardiff, The Skypad for 1 hour.

Teenage Cancer Trust opened its state-of-the-art eight bed unit at University Hospital Wales in 2009. The unit caters for young cancer patients aged between 14 and 25 and includes a chill-out zone, access to media facilities such as the internet, TV and music, a dining area, patients kitchen and parents room with kitchenette. The vibrant wall designs and furniture also help make the unit a home-from-home experience.
