PENARTH Leisure Centre's swimming pool is set to remain closed for nearly six months as the clean-up operation from a major fire continues.

A spokesman from Parkwood Leisure, who run the leisure centre on behalf of the Vale Council, said that it was hoped the pool would reopen by the end of July.

"If all repair works go to plan, this should be achieved," he said.

"As the damage caused to the health suite structure was very extensive, further architectural planning and work will be needed before it will open again.

"Thank you to all our centre users for your ongoing patience throughout the pool closure."

The whole leisure centre had to be evacuated after an accidental fire, thought to be caused by an electrical fault, broke out in the sauna in February this year.

The leisure centre, gym and main hall were closed for several weeks while cleaning was carried out, but the health suite and swimming pool have remained closed ever since.
