CHILDREN at Ysgol Pen y Garth had extra inspiration on sports day when Olympic hurdler Colin Jackson secretly stopped by to see the athletic action.

The former 110m hurdles world champion and Olympic Silver medallist had planned a low key visit to watch his nephew, a Year 6 pupil at the school, compete.

But as soon as he was spotted, the BBC presenter, who still holds the 60m hurdles world record, had lines of young fans queuing for an autograph. He even signed the arm cast of pupil Elen Evans.

"We feel very lucky to have had such an inspirational figure with us at sports day," said head teacher Iona Edwards.

"After patiently signing a mountain of autographs for the children, Mr Jackson very kindly agreed to judge our Tug of War competition and present the overall prize to the winning house, Idwal."
