JUST days after a traffic light warning system was introduced to the crossing to Sully Island nine people had to be rescued after being cut off by the tide on the weekend.
Penarth’s RNLI Lifeboat was called at around 12.30pm on Sunday, June 22, after five adults and four children were stranded on the island.
They were rescued by trainee helm Jen Payne, along with her volunteer crew, on her first shout in command.
It comes after a traffic light warning system was launched last Wednesday, June 18, that tells visitors when it is safe to cross, when time is running out and when it is unsafe to cross.
There is also a countdown warning of how long is left to cross the causeway and return to the mainland, as well as red, amber and green lights, in a bid to help people unaware of the tide times.
If the trial period is successful over the summer the warning system could be rolled out across the UK.
Penarth RNLI and Coastguards both welcomed the system last week and said they hoped it would reduce the number of call-outs and reduce the risk to people’s lives.
